The Early Birds began in 2012 with ten pictures, "The Early Bird (Sigh) Traces I" to "X". They show rooms with patterned wallpaper in which birds, hands and letters appear. The movements of these figures have remained in the picture as traces. The pictures were first shown in the exhibition "Traces" at Kunstsäle Berlin, from 26 October to 8 December 2012, together with pictures by Hartmut Neumann. There are nine copies of each motif.
The pictures are computed from 3D scenes, and these scenes have been kept. In printmaking, the plate determines what each impression looks like. With a 3D scene, light, viewpoint and output are determined anew for each version. This is why the Early Birds have kept coming into being again since 2012.
In 2018 the Goethe-Institut included the Early Birds in the exhibition "Die Macht der Vervielfältigung / O Poder da Multiplicação" (The Power of Multiplication), curated by Gregor Jansen. The exhibition took Walter Benjamin's reflections on original and reproduction as its starting point and showed 14 artists from Brazil and Germany, first at the Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre (11 September to 11 November 2018), then at the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei (28 February to 23 March 2019). For the two halls the wall works "Early Bird - MDV I" (2018) and "MDV II" (2019) were made. With an app and 3D glasses, visitors saw the beak of a large bird reach into the room in front of the wall. The catalogue was published by Kerber in 2019.
Also in 2018, two further versions were made from the scenes of 2012. "Revisited" is computed in black and white and without wallpaper. For "Robographic" a drawing machine drew the construction lines of each scene. In 2021 three motifs were recomputed for Griffelkunst; a robotic arm cut the corresponding etching into the copper plate. "Haruspex. Early Bird." (2022) contains colour spaces that cannot yet be printed, and the right to print the work later. The app "TB - Early Birds AR" has shown the series in space since 2018, since 2024 with all versions.
At Art Cologne 2024 (7 to 10 November), "Early Bird I (robographic)" was on view in a special exhibition of the LBBW collection. In 2025 the MEWO Kunsthalle in Memmingen showed seven Early Birds in the solo exhibition "IM MOMENT ANDERS" (2 August to 26 October 2025), among them the wall work "Traces Stage - Anaglyph". Since 20 September 2026 the ten motifs of 2012 have been on view at Kunstmuseum Celle in "Aschevogel. Bilder und Voraussetzungen" (until 29 August 2027).
